The Ultimate Vegan Guide to Rio de Janeiro: Top Vegan Restaurants

Contents

Heading to Rio de Janeiro and need some vegan or vegetarian eats? Here are my top picks!

If you’re a veggie lover visiting Brazil, here’s a heads-up: the go-to dish here is rice and beans, but often the beans are cooked with meat. So always double-check and ask for the vegetarian version.

Luckily, Rio has a bunch of cool vegan and vegetarian spots.

From traditional dishes like rice and beans to modern places with meat and dairy substitutes, there’s something for everyone.

Plus, Rio hosts awesome vegan events every other week—think fairs with fantastic vegan food you won’t find in restaurants, like cheeses, coxinhas (Brazilian snacks), ice creams, and more. During my 5-month stint in Rio, I hit up nearly every fair, and even non-vegan friends had a blast.

Check out their Facebook page for the latest events.

Teva – Best Vegan Eats in Rio

Teva is hands-down the top vegan spot in Rio, and maybe even Brazil. This upscale plant-based restaurant and bar has it all: modern decor, eco-friendly vibes, and, most importantly, amazing organic dishes. Their cauliflower “steak” is a must-try, and their appetizers, made with fresh veggies, are bursting with flavor. Don’t miss their desserts—they’re top-notch, which is rare in Latin America. Gaia – Light and Middle Eastern Flavors

Over in Copacabana (near the Rock of Leme), Gaia is a charming, casual spot that’s strictly vegetarian with plenty of vegan options. They offer a mix of Latin and Middle Eastern dishes. The food is simple and tasty. I’ve been there several times and enjoyed every meal. @gaiaartecafe

Veganza

If you’d rather stay in and find vegan products in supermarkets a challenge, Veganza in Ipanema has you covered. This store stocks nearly all the vegan goodies Brazil has to offer, plus you can sample some food in-store and then buy frozen versions to take home. Their Pão de Queijo (Brazilian cheese bread) in vegan form is a must-try. @veganzaemporioriodejaneiro

Hareburger

I’m not usually a burger fan—vegan or not—but Hareburger changed my mind! It’s one of the best vegan burgers I’ve had in Latin America. They offer several vegan options, including a Brazilian classic: Coxinha de Jaca, a fried pastry with jackfruit that has a chicken-like texture. Hareburger has multiple locations, but I usually went to the Rio Sul mall to escape the heat. @hareburger

Reino Vegetal – Pay by Weight

This place is a hidden gem! It’s tucked away and not easy to find, but totally worth the search. It’s a buffet-style spot where you pay by weight. Located in downtown, you’ll need to keep an eye out for the street numbers and then climb some stairs. Once you find it, just follow your nose!

Bio Carioca – Simple Brazilian Fare

Bio Carioca was my first vegan restaurant in Rio. Located in the heart of Copacabana, it serves simple, tasty Brazilian food. It’s a great option for a lunch break after a morning at the beach. @biocarioca

Lampamaki – Vegan Sushi Lampamaki offers a vegan “all-you-can-eat” sushi option. While it wasn’t my absolute favorite, it’s a decent choice if you’re really craving sushi. Otherwise, you can always order veggie sushi at other spots.
