Sri Lanka is packed with photogenic spots that’ll have you reaching for your camera and booking a flight ASAP.
Ever wondered where all those amazing Instagram photos are snapped?
Here’s your ultimate guide to the most Instagrammable places in Sri Lanka:
Tree Swing, Unawatuna
Unawatuna has two awesome tree swings, both on Wijaya Beach (a quick tuktuk ride from Unawatuna’s main beach). Once you get there, head toward the giant rock with palm trees on it (it’s on your right if you’re facing the beach).
Heads up—this Instagrammable spot isn’t free! You’ll need to pay 5000 Rupees (around $3) for three swings. Totally worth it for the experience of swinging from a coconut tree over the waves.

9 Arches Bridge, Ella

This iconic bridge in Ella sits in a lush green valley. If you’re staying in “downtown” Ella, either take a tuktuk or stroll along the train tracks for about 30 minutes. Early morning is the best time to visit to avoid the crowds. Around train time, expect a lot of tourists and drones aiming for that perfect shot. Be prepared for random rain showers!
Coconut Tree Hill, Mirissa

Coconut Tree Hill is best at sunset or sunrise. It gets really crowded during sunset, so arrive early to catch the changing colors in the sky about 30 minutes before the sun dips.

Lighthouse, Galle
Galle’s colonial charm includes its picturesque lighthouse. The best time to snap a photo is before 9 am to avoid the crowds and enjoy the refreshing sea breeze.

Scenic Train Ride
To capture the perfect train shot, you’ll need door access. If you didn’t score a first-class ticket (which is tough during peak season), get on the train after everyone else to snag the best seat. Botanical Gardens, Kandy

While Kandy isn’t a must-visit, if you’re there, hop in a tuktuk to the Botanical Gardens. Skip the random strolls and head straight to the palm tree avenue and the flower section. The rest is pretty average.
Railways, Ella
Around Ella and near the 9 Arches Bridge, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for a great railway shot. So, who took the better shot—me or the dog?
Pidurangala, Sigiriya
While Lion’s Rock is the main attraction in Sigiriya, many prefer the hike up Pidurangala Rock for stunning views of Lion’s Rock. Which hike is better? Click here for my take.
Viewpoint of Mirissa Beach

In Mirissa, you can experience dramatic low and high tides. During low tide, climb up a rock for a great view of Mirissa. At high tide, get ready to get a bit wet! Pro tip: head up during sunrise to catch the fishermen in action.
