Jericoacoara is home to some of Brazil’s most Instagrammable sights, and the turquoise lagoons of Buraco Azul are no exception. But are these vibrant blue pools a natural wonder or something man-made? Well, it’s a mix of both!
A few years ago, while construction crews were building a road near Jericoacoara, they dug up some huge holes. Then nature did its thing—rainwater filled up the holes, creating two stunning turquoise lagoons that quickly gained popularity, especially on social media.
Buraco Azul: Castelhano vs. Caiçara
There are actually two lagoons, both commonly referred to as Buraco Azul, but they each offer a different vibe. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Buraco Azul Caiçara: This lagoon is smaller and shallower, making it easier to access for drone shots. It has three hammocks, but they’re off to the side. Caiçara is perfect if you’re after a more laid-back experience, without the crowds.
Buraco Azul Castelhano: This is the more developed of the two and comes with a small entry fee (R$5). It’s also a photographer’s dream, with a hammock hanging over the water and a flower-adorned swing that’s perfect for that Instagram shot.
Which Lagoon is More Photogenic?
For Instagram-worthy photos, Castelhano tends to be the favorite due to its picture-perfect hammock and swing setup. However, if you’re using a drone, Caiçara is often easier to capture because of its smaller size and shallower waters. Just keep in mind that you might need a floatie to get those shots in Castelhano!
The Water: What’s the Difference?
- Castelhano: This lagoon is deeper, with steep walls, making it a bit riskier. There are three floaties available at the entrance if you want some extra support.
- Caiçara: Smaller and with lower walls, this lagoon is perfect for jumping into the water and offers a laid-back vibe.
How to Get to the Turquoise Lagoons of Buraco Azul
Both lagoons are located about 40 minutes from Jericoacoara in northeastern Brazil. The easiest way to get there is by buggy, which will cost around R$100 for a group of 4-5 people.
If you’re looking to visit Caiçara, consider joining the East Side Tour of Jeri, which costs about R$400 per buggy and covers multiple attractions, including the lagoon.
Pro tip: If you’re heading to the lagoon on your own, try to arrive before 9 a.m. to avoid the crowds. If you’re on a tour, ask to visit the lagoons first for a more peaceful experience.
Drone Shots: Capture That Perfect Aerial Shot
If you don’t have a drone but still want that perfect aerial shot, consider hiring a local. However, be cautious—Jericoacoara is a touristy spot, and some photographers may overcharge. A reasonable rate for one hour of drone shooting is about R$150.
I once had a bad experience with a guy named Gerson, who tried to charge me R$350 and then messed up my shot because his drone malfunctioned. To make things worse, he even ruined my own drone! Afterward, he sent me low-quality videos and refused to share the originals. Safe to say, I wouldn’t recommend working with him.
But here’s a guy I do recommend: Entony – +55 88 97544179. He’s reliable and offers high-quality service.
