Arequipa, Peru – White City with eternal summer

Looking for warm weather and rest? Arequipa is the city for you.

Beyond Coca Valley - Attractions

Free Walking Tour

In Arquipe you can do two different hikes – one leaving in the morning and the other at noon.

A morning stroll will take you to the city centre, various churches, a nice neighbourhood and a strange bridge. The most fun was on the market. I recommend the net trip because of the interesting information we received and because we knew a lot of hidden places in the city.

The lunch trip will take you to the “alpaca world” where you will learn about different types of alpacas and the production of wool, in addition there is a pretty shocking living corner where you can pet the alpacas. There are five different alpacas that live there in Fitzy Territory… Not really human… But okay… The tour will end at a vantage point at sunset.

We arrived at these places the day before on an independent trip so we took the trip in the morning.

Observations

Yanahuara Lookout

Nice spot to see the mountains above the city . It’s best to arrive before sunset as this is when you see the best mountains.

Rooftop view at Katari Hotel

The hotel is located opposite the cathedral in plaza de Armas and the hotel’s rooftop restaurant is perfect for views of the main square. It’s best to arrive before sunset and watch as the colours and square change.

The sun sets behind the hotel so you won’t see the sunset itself.

Important tips – there are strong winds on the roof and once the sun starts to set it starts to become frozen!!! So bring coats (they also hand out blankets). Plus prices there are expensive so don’t build on dinner there but maybe do on a light aprettiff before the meal.

Markets

Arequipa has one major market and is huge and really fun.

The market has over-the-top hats (you can change them a bit), a whole passage with fruits and juices of course, and places to have lunch on the second floor.

Market Tips:

At the entrance to the market, there are sellers of delicious empanadas (vegetarian is vegan) in one sole!

In the passage of the juices, go to booth 20 for Nancy and order any juice. If she made you too much natural juice, she’ll just give you what’s left (so it comes out we paid for juice for each one and when we’re done she just filled our glass with more juice)

At the market you can taste the local ice cream – Queso Helado and it’s not cheese ice cream but is called that because of its serving shape in a kind of slices like cheese slices.

Monastery of Santa Catarina

One of the attractions is a visit to the particularly photogenic Monastery of Santa Catarina.

Admission costs 40 sol and the visit takes about an hour.

The monastery is huge and tells of the life of the nuns who lived there (it is advisable to read the small signs because without it you will understand nothing). Many come to the monastery because of its beauty as many of its walls are painted red or blue reminiscent of the blue city of Morocco.

More recommendations for Arekipa

Toque X Manicure Pedicure Institute

The recommended institute is located while some lokies in Peru but in Arquipe their prices are cheaper. Manicure with nail polish costs around 40 sole and pedicures around 50 sol. The girls there are insanely professional and at the highest level compared to the country (which is why the color selection is not as huge as we used to).

There is also a number if you like.

Shopping

If you’re not planning on shopping in Lima or need something urgent, I’d recommend popping into the Real Plaza mall where there’s a large H&M branch with great prices.

Where to sleep in Arquipe?

Arequipa is a hotcity? That’s why it’s very, very important for the mind and what not to take a place with apool. Just, not necessary but definitely upgrading the stay!

Selina Arequipa

When we got to this hotel we were at the market because it was beautiful. In the center The Hostel Find Pool Little and from around Beds and bespies Them You can Loming. In the grassy area you will find And there’s a tree house where you can read some slackline and yoga fabrics in the air. It’s amazing..

At this hostel you will also find space for a co-work, a library, a cinema room and a shop with clothes and souvenirs.

I recommend downloading the app to earn discounts for activities and classes or things at the bar.

Quaderlops Room– At the beginning of my stay in Selena Arequipa I slept in a huge room with two floors and 4 beds. The room is highly recommended for families

Private room – private room fun and actually some cottages surrounding the pool. Those on the upper floors even have a balcony.

Dorms:

The dorms in Arequipe were more upgraded than those in the Cusco in terms of beds. There you can find rooms that combine floor beds and regular beds. Inside each already in bed you will have a sort of lockable shelf where you can charge all your devices and actually not worry about being stolen. As far as I’m concerned, it was heaven. I left the skitter, all the cameras and what’s not charging, locked up and walked out.

The toilet was a bit older as Selena actually took over an old hotel and some of the windows didn’t include curtains but we got along.

The main area is the pool and bar. The pool is surrounded by pool chairs and beds with pillows. It was the perfect rest after all the cold and trekking in Cuzco.

This hostel by Selena felt just like a hotel when you came out of the 1940s and in fact the hostel is not really a hostel in the sense of the guests – not only for the rescuers but also for couples and even families with children.

Bottom line– If you are looking for a party hostel/ hostel with a young girlfriend this is not the hostel for you. If you want to indulge in some and don’t travel alone Selena for you.

If you’re looking for a different wave, consider
the Wild Rover Arequipa
for a party atmosphere or
Los Andes for
peace and cleanliness.

Where to eat in Arquipe?

Eco Brunch

Pasta cantina

A favorite restaurant for many tourists is this little pasta restaurant. Please note that the restaurant does not have vegan options but literally some shops downstairs have a burger restaurant with a vegan burger (I went to order and they brought me the burger for the pasta restaurant so I could eat with a girlfriend.

The restaurant is known for its excellent quality pastas and cheesweel dishes where your pasta will actually be served in a wheel of cheese.

Le Petite Française

And for dessert you can just go to the café next to it that features vegan crepes!

Omphalos

The best vegan restaurant in Arquipe. They have a huge menu. Too big for my taste, really lost, so it’s just better if the waitress recommends something.

Although it’s the most highly regarded restaurant it’s not a hit compared to our standards. Their vegan “meat” isn’t a hit and their cheese is just a piece of tofu. So it’s best to order simple dishes without substitutes.

Especially recommends their chocolate cake which was nimed and melted in the mouth.

Eco Brunch

Best place for breakfast or brunch. They make toast and pancakes and have amazing vegan pancakes!!!

El Buda Profano

Nice vegan sushi right at Lidako Brunch with great sushi. There’s another sushi restaurant next door with un vegan sushi.
