Looking for warm weather and relaxation? Arequipa is your ideal destination.
Known as the “White City,” not because of its architecture but due to the presence of white-skinned foreigners (“gringos”) who have settled in the city.
While there isn’t an overwhelming amount to do, most travelers visit Arequipa as a launching point for the Coca Valley trek or to enjoy the stunning condor viewing.
Still, Arequipa is a charming city, and I found myself spending four days there, enjoying the laid-back vibe.

Top Things to Do in Arequipa, Peru
Coca Valley Trek
- Long Trek: For adventure enthusiasts, the 2-3 day trek through the Coca Valley is a popular option. This trail takes you down to the valley floor and back up again, offering an opportunity to see condors.
- Daily Trip: If you’re short on time, you can opt for a day trip. However, I wouldn’t recommend it. We barely saw two condors, and they were far off. After that, the trip included a stop to taste cactus fruit and ended with an optional visit to hot springs. The springs were a nice touch, but overall, the day trip felt unnecessary.
Beyond the Coca Valley: Other Attractions
- Free Walking Tour: Arequipa offers two walking tours—one in the morning and one at noon. The morning tour covers the city center, local churches, and a quaint neighborhood, culminating in a visit to the vibrant Arequipa Market. I recommend this tour as it gives you insights into hidden gems around the city.
The noon tour takes you to Alpaca World, where you can learn about alpacas and wool production. It ends at a scenic viewpoint to catch the sunset. However, we had already visited many of these spots independently, so I preferred the morning tour.
- Santa Catalina Monastery
One of the most photogenic spots in Arequipa, the Santa Catalina Monastery is a must-visit. Entrance costs 40 soles, and the tour will take about an hour. The monastery is massive, with its red and blue walls reminiscent of Morocco’s Blue City. Make sure to read the signs to understand the lives of the nuns who once resided here.
Best Observatories in Arequipa: Yanahuara Lookout and More
- Yanahuara Lookout: This is the best spot to see the mountains surrounding Arequipa. Head here just before sunset to witness the mountains bathed in golden light.
- Katari Hotel Rooftop: Overlooking Plaza de Armas, this rooftop restaurant provides an excellent view of the main square, particularly as the sun begins to set. Be prepared for cold winds once the sun goes down, so pack a coat. While it’s a bit pricey, it’s perfect for an evening drink before dinner.
Exploring Arequipa’s Market
The local market in Arequipa is huge and fun to explore, especially if you’re into street food and fresh produce.
- Try the Empanadas: At the entrance, you’ll find empanada vendors selling vegetarian (and sometimes vegan) options for just 1 sole!
- Fruit Juice Stalls: Head to booth #20 for Nancy’s fresh juices—she’s generous, often offering free refills if she makes too much.
- Queso Helado: Despite its name, this “cheese ice cream” doesn’t contain any cheese. It’s named for its shape and is a must-try while you’re here.
Where to Stay in Arequipa: Best Hostels and Hotels
Arequipa enjoys warm weather year-round, so choosing accommodation with a pool is highly recommended for maximum relaxation.
Selina Arequipa
I stayed at Selina Arequipa, which offers a fantastic mix of style and comfort.
Located near the market, the hostel boasts a small pool surrounded by lounge chairs, perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing.
This hostel has everything from a coworking space to a cinema room and even yoga fabrics suspended in the air for those wanting to stretch out after a long trek.
- Quadruple Room: If you’re traveling with family, the four-bed room is spacious, split into two floors, and highly recommended.
- Private Rooms: Private rooms are scattered around the pool, and those on the upper floors have balconies.
- Dorms: The dorms in Arequipa are a notch above, with lockable shelves at each bed, allowing you to charge your devices securely.
Overall, Selina is ideal for digital nomads, families, or travelers seeking a relaxing stay. However, if you’re looking for a party hostel, this isn’t the place for you. For a more social vibe, consider Wild Rover Arequipa or the quieter Los Andes for a peaceful retreat.
Where to Eat in Arequipa: Best Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in Arequipa, Peru
From vegan sushi to the best brunch spots, discover the top vegan-friendly restaurants in Arequipa.
- Pasta Cantina: This little pasta restaurant is a favorite for tourists, serving delicious pasta dishes, including the famous cheesewheel pasta. Although they don’t offer vegan options, there’s a nearby burger joint that will deliver vegan burgers to the pasta restaurant so you can enjoy your meal with friends.
- Le Petite Française: Just next door, you’ll find this café serving up vegan crepes, making it a perfect spot for dessert.
- Omphalos: Touted as the best vegan restaurant in Arequipa, Omphalos has a huge menu. However, I recommend keeping your order simple—some of their vegan “meat” substitutes and tofu-based cheese aren’t up to par. Their chocolate cake, though, is to die for.
- Eco Brunch: The best spot for a healthy breakfast or brunch, Eco Brunch serves amazing vegan pancakes and delicious toast.
- El Buda Profano: If you’re in the mood for sushi, this spot serves vegan sushi right next door to Eco Brunch, making it a great combo.
